Hana Alison is a printmaker and illustrative artist with an interest in social and environmental issues working in Tarntanya/Adelaide and Naarm/Melbourne. Drawing on personal explorations of self-realisation in Western society, Alison examines the dynamics of individualism and interpersonal relations, deconstructing how communication influences our lived experiences. Informed by contemporary research in pedagogy and post-humanistic theories, she investigates how an awareness of our social milieu can deepen our understanding of our human experience and environmental impact.
Using intaglio techniques, Alison combines coarse texture with fragile linework to produce obscured figurative depictions. Furthermore, considering materiality and transparency, Alison utilises alternative papers, textiles and metal to emphasise the immediacy and fragility of the issues presented. Alison’s work strives to attune viewers to the subtleties of human connection and phenomena, encouraging a greater emotional intelligence and provoking reflection on the viewer’s relationship to others and the environment.
